From Lemurs to Leaf-tailed Geckos

Exploring Madagascar’s Rainforest

Speaker: Heather Miller

Time: 12.00pm

Location: Theatre 2

The remote and wild rainforests of Madagascar are abound with lemurs, chameleons, frogs, snakes, tenrecs and other wildlife, yet are visited by few. Join us to hear about some of the wildest areas such as the Masoala National Park, Nosy Mangabe, the Pangalanes Canal and the Anjajavy Private Nature Reserve, and find out about the wildlife you can expect to see around every corner…

However, Madagascar is not just about wildlife. It is an island rich in diverse cultures. Learn about staying at a remote camp with the Antandroy - one of Madagascar’s fiercest and most traditional tribes - where you can learn about ancestor worship, walk with them into the Sacred Forest, visit the ombiasy (traditional healer) and take a zebu-cart to the colourful market at Fenaivo.

Finally, we will take a look at the popular island of Nosy Be, as well as the traditional island of Ile Ste Marie and the idyllic islands of the Nosy Mitsio Archipelago. Discover how you can charter your own yacht and sail around Madagascar’s remote northwest coast.

This talk is aimed at those who do not want to go on a standard two week trip of Madagascar but who want to see a different side to the island, a wilder one - and one where there are lots of proper adventures to be had!
