Stanfords Travel Writers Festival
Escaping the Rat Race and Brewing Beer in the Loire
Micro-breweries are popping up every day making styles of ale that are re-defining beer as a luxury drink, so Tommy decides to start a micro-brewery in his barn in France. Sadly, it turns out 20 years of drinking beer doesn’t qualify you to brew it. Tommy Barnes talks to Julia Wheeler about his experiences of leaving London behind to begin a new life in the Loire with his family and starting a micro-brewery with no previous experience.
After the talk, Tommy will be signing copies of his book A Beer in the Loire at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
Ed Gorman in Conversation with John McCarthy
Ed Gorman talks to John McCarthy about his career as a journalist covering conflicts in Northern Ireland, the Gulf, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Balkans and Afghanistan. Looking at how these experiences can completely change your life, they will also be talking about Ed’s book Death of a Translator which is a searingly honest description of a mind haunted and eventually paralysed by the terror of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
After the talk, Ed will be signing copies of his book Death of a Translator at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
Paddling Britain and Beyond with Lizzie Carr
In 2016 Lizzie Car became the first person to paddle board the entire length of Britain’s waterways. In 2017 she became the first woman to paddle board solo across the English Channel. In 2018 she became the first person to paddle board the entire length of the Hudson River. She combined her paddle boarding with raising awareness of plastic pollution. Lizzie speaks to Phoebe Smith about how paddle boarding has gained popularity and become an easy way to travel waterways. She will also be giving tips on how we can all do our bit to improve plastic pollution.
After the talk, Lizzie will be signing copies of her book Paddling Britain at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
Reading the Landscpe
Achieve a level of outdoor awareness that will enable you to understand the landscape around you. Tristan Gooley shows how it is possible to sense direction from stars and plants, forecast weather from woodland sounds and predict the next action of an animal from its body language – instantly. Mary-Ann Ochota shares her archaeological expertise to reveal the historic features you can spot in the countryside around you – from Bronze Age burial mounds to turnpiked toll roads.
After the talk, Tristan and Mary-Ann will be signing copies of their books including Wild Signs and Star Paths: The Keys to our Lost Sixth Sense and Hidden Histories: A Spotter’s Guide to the British Landscape at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
Levison Wood in Conversation
Levison Wood talks to Paul Blezard about his life as an adventurer and his latest book Arabia. Following in the footsteps of great explorers such as Lawrence of Arabia and Wilfred Thesiger, Arabia is Levison Wood's account of his most complex expedition yet: circumnavigating the Arabian Peninsula. Travelling through some of the harshest and most beautiful environments on earth, he seeks to challenge our perceptions of an often misunderstood part of the world, seeing how the region has changed and examining the stories we don't often hear about in the media.
After the talk, Levison will be signing copies of his books, including Arabia at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
