London Okinawa Sanshinkai: Okinawan folk and classical music
We will perform Okinawan folk and classical music with traditional dance using the sanshin and taiko (stick and drum), samba (like a castanet) and other instruments.
The sanshin is the most prominent musical instrument in the musical traditions of the Ryukyu Islands (Old Okinawa). The three-stringed lute is used in classical, folk, and popular music. The sanshin has been popular not only in mainland Japan but worldwide and the success of musicians from Okinawa has received much attention in recent decades.
London Okinawa Sanshinkai was established in 1999 and our mission is to introduce Okinawan culture further in the UK and enrich the existing relationship between Okinawa and the UK which has been established through Japan (including Okinawa) related events.
Traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu
Goju Ryu literally means “Hard and Soft style”, which relates to the type of techniques used in Goju Ryu. “Go” being hard, for strong closed hand or straight techniques; “Ju” being soft, for open hand and circular movements. The demonstration will highlight basic blocks and strikes “Kihon”, traditional partner work, and supplementary training “Hojo Undo”.
Traditional Cossack Dancing
The Cossacks are a well known Cossack dancing act, who have performed too many people over the years. Spanning from Opera Houses to live TV shows. With their high kicking and energetic routines they always leave the audience wanting more!
