Description
Bobotie – a traditional South African Shepherd’s Pie, reminiscent of a moussaka, with a savoury egg custard topping.
Pronounced "ba-boor-tea", the national dish of South Africa is a delicious mixture of curried meat and fruit, rumoured to have its origins to the ancient Romans with many layers of meat, fruit and vegetables.
Over the years, the dish has tremendously been simplified by using curry powder and incorporating onion, nuts and dried fruits, predominately almonds and raisins, but garnished with walnuts, chutney and bananas.
Traditionally served either with yellow rice, roasted butternut squash, toasted coconut and peas or even a simple salad, this dish could substitute the humble Shepherd’s Pie to be served on any day of the week or even on specials occasions.
