The Art of Kimono – Bristol Japan Cultural Society, in partnership with InsideJapan Tours

On behalf of the Japan travel experts, InsideJapan Tours, Shihomi, Michiyo and Tomoe from the Bristol Japan Cultural Society demonstrate the fine art of dressing in exquisite Japanese kimono and explain the history and purpose of different kinds of kimono and obi belt.

Makulay na Filipinas (Colourful Philippines)

Lahing Kayumanggi Dance Company- Founded in 1994

 

In 2014 LK proudly celebrated its 20th anniversary since its humble beginnings as an informal community group led by choreographer Ronnie del Barrio, who had been commission by the Philippine Centre to create a cultural performance for their annual event. Together with members of the Filipino Women’s Assocition UK and other individuals Ronnie founded the dance company in 1994, which has since progressed and developed as a respected and admired dance company.

 

LK has gained an international reputation as Europe’s foremost Filipino folk and cultural dance company and as goodwill ambassadors for the Philippines in promoting Philippine cultural heritage. LK have had invitations to perform across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe — Amsterdam, Berlin, Bayreuth, Copenhagen, Dublin, Malmö, Stockholm, Vienna.

Noble Caledonia present a Pop-Up Opera with London Festival Opera

This Pop-Up Opera, with music from composers such as Mozart, Gershwin and Puccini, will give you a taste of what you can experience on one of Noble Caledonia’s popular music themed tours or cruises. London Festival Opera has performed for Presidents, Prime Ministers and senior members of the British and European Royal Families. Engagements have included a private performance in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen, charity performances for the Presidents of France and Malta, for the Prime Minster at 10 Downing Street, the Ambassador at the British Embassy in Paris, and as a guest company in one of Italy’s greatest opera houses, La Fenice in Venice during the Carnival Celebrations. You can enjoy performances by London Festival Opera during Noble Caledonia tours in Russia, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Malta and the United Kingdom.

London Okinawa Sanshinkai: Okinawan folk and classical music

We will perform Okinawan folk and classical music with traditional dance using the sanshin and taiko (stick and drum), samba (like a castanet) and other instruments.

The sanshin is the most prominent musical instrument in the musical traditions of the Ryukyu Islands (Old Okinawa). The three-stringed lute is used in classical, folk, and popular music. The sanshin has been popular not only in mainland Japan but worldwide and the success of musicians from Okinawa has received much attention in recent decades.

London Okinawa Sanshinkai was established in 1999 and our mission is to introduce Okinawan culture further in the UK and enrich the existing relationship between Okinawa and the UK which has been established through Japan (including Okinawa) related events.

Imbube UK Drummers & Dancers

The Imbube drummers and dancers are a unique organisation formed of the most talented and professional African artists and musicians based in the UK. Their main aim is to promote South African heritage and culture to all ages, and host or support a variety of activities and events that connect people to the unique culture. The group provide South African language classes, workshops in schools and educational institutions, music and dance, bead making, traditional clothing and storytelling. The group has a full membered choir of 20 singers which has toured and performed all over the UK and abroad, singing in different African languages, and offering a cappella, classical and traditional gospel songs with a seven-piece band  - as well as energetic Zulu dancing and drumming that brings excitement and tells a story.

The demonstration will highlight basic blocks and strikes “Kihon”, traditional partner work, and supplementary training “Hojo Undo”.
