Around the World in 80 Trees
Calling all nature lovers. Join us as Jonathan Drori talks about his new book Around the World in 80 Trees. From India’s sacred banyan to the fragrant cedar of Lebanon, they offer us sanctuary and inspiration – not to mention the raw materials for everything from aspirin to maple syrup. Jonathan uses plant science to illuminate how trees play a role in every part of human life, from the romantic to the regrettable, to the downright ridiculous.
After the talk, Jonathan will be signing copies of his book Around the World in 80 Trees at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
Running Britain with Sean Conway
Sean Conway talks to Phoebe Smith about the third and final leg in the world’s first length of Britain Triathlon. Having already cycled and swum the length of Britain, Sean completed his trilogy by running all the way from John O'Groats to Land's End entirely unsupported. The adventure was turned into a successful Documentary on Discovery Channel. Sean ran nearly a marathon every day carrying just a small rucksack and had to change trainers every 10 days because they wore out.
After the talk, Sean will be signing copies of his books including Running Britain at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
Travel Safety with International Security Expert Lloyd Figgins
The rewards you can reap from exploring this amazing planet are incalculable. Every year, more and more of us are discovering the joy, the excitement, the sheer sense of adventure in roaming the world. But travelling, particularly to the more remote and volatile corners of the globe, can be a dangerous business. If you don't prepare properly - by looking for potential hazards and learning how best to deal with them - you may wish you'd never started out. Lloyd Figgins, travel risk expert & author of the The Travel Survival Guide offers up-to-date, no-nonsense, practical advice on how to prepare for a trip, recognise warning signs, avoid potential hazards and cope with emergencies should they occur.
After the talk, Lloyd will be signing copies of his book The Travel Survival Guide at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
Cycling with a Rescued Street Dog
Ishbel Holmes was determined to cycle the world but her journey took a completely unexpected turn when she rescued a street dog in Turkey. Between the two there formed a deep bond and their relationship was followed and supported by thousands of readers online, before becoming a media sensation overnight when Ishbel put out a plea for help to transport Lucy to an animal shelter three hundred miles away. Ishbel talks to Phoebe Smith about this heart-rending tale of adventure, one person's determination to cross an unfamiliar country by bike and the unforgettable scenes that greet her on the Turkey-Syria border and into Syria itself.
After the talk, Ishbel will be signing copies of her book Me, My Bike and a Street Dog Called Lucy at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
Levison Wood in Conversation
Levison Wood talks to Julia Wheeler about his life as an adventurer and his latest book Arabia. Following in the footsteps of great explorers such as Lawrence of Arabia and Wilfred Thesiger, Arabia is Levison Wood's account of his most complex expedition yet: circumnavigating the Arabian Peninsula. Travelling through some of the harshest and most beautiful environments on earth, he seeks to challenge our perceptions of an often misunderstood part of the world, seeing how the region has changed and examining the stories we don't often hear about in the media.
After the talk, Levison will be signing copies of his books, including Arabia at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.
