Focus on my favourite Portuguese islands – Flores in the Azores and Fogo in Cape Verde.

Travel is not a bucket list of places you visit in your lifetime; it’s about the people we meet during our travels, the quality of time you have in the places you visit and the friends we make in the end.

During the presentation, I want to focus on my favourite island in the Azores, Flores a lush volcanic island with flowers and my favourite island in Cape Verde, Fogo the island of fire  – they have more in common than just the first letter ‘F!’

I'll talk about the similarities and differences between the islands and show some of the most amazing drone footage made by a talented videographer who was commissioned by us and spent some time on both islands. The talk will also include interviews with some of our friends who live on Flores and Fogo and who share our love of these remote places of the world.

Travel Etiquette

When travelling, what is appropriate behaviour when greeting people? Should you offer a handshake, a kiss on the cheek or two kisses? Different countries have their own set of rules regarding eating, dressing, cleanliness, hospitality and religion. What traditions should you absolutely partake in and which should you merely observe. Are there ways to find out these things before hand or should you just trust the kindness of strangers? Phoebe Smith, Fearghal O'Nuallain, and Andy Scott share their knowledge and experiences with Paul Blezard.

After the talk Phoebe, Fearghal and Andy Scott and Phoebe Smith will be signing copies of their books, including The Wilderness Cookbook, The Kindness of Strangers and One Kiss or Two at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.

You Are Here: A Brief Guide to the World with Nicholas Crane

One word binds us all: geography. We are all geographers, human beings who care about the places we think of as 'home' - our habitat. Nicholas Crane makes the compelling case to Julia Wheeler that geography has never been so important. On this finite orb, with its battered habitat, sustained in dark space by a thin, life-giving atmosphere, we have reached a point in our collective geographical journey where knowledge is the best guarantor of the future.

After the talk, Nicholas will be signing copies of his books, including You Are Here at the ‘Signings at Stanfords’ stand.

When Monisha Rajesh announced plans to circumnavigate the globe in eighty train journeys, she was met with wide-eyed disbelief. London Okinawa Sanshinkai: Okinawan folk and classical music

We will perform Okinawan folk and classical music with traditional dance using the sanshin and taiko (stick and drum), samba (like a castanet) and other instruments.

The sanshin is the most prominent musical instrument in the musical traditions of the Ryukyu Islands (Old Okinawa). The three-stringed lute is used in classical, folk, and popular music. The sanshin has been popular not only in mainland Japan but worldwide and the success of musicians from Okinawa has received much attention in recent decades.

London Okinawa Sanshinkai was established in 1999 and our mission is to introduce Okinawan culture further in the UK and enrich the existing relationship between Okinawa and the UK which has been established through Japan (including Okinawa) related events.
